Information about Travel Soccer
What is Travel Soccer?
Travel soccer is for the player who takes soccer more seriously. Hyde Park teams travel to play against teams from surrounding towns. Travel soccer includes teams with ages from U-08 to U-18. Teams in each age group are arranged in divisions depending on skill level. There are both boys and girls teams and divisions, but girls can and do play on boys teams.
Who Can Tryout For Travel Soccer?
Travel soccer teams hold tryouts each spring for the season which begins in the next Autumn. Boys and girls 6 to 18 yrs old can tryout for a Hyde Park team. Teams are organized by age group and designated U9 (under 9 yrs old), U10 (under 10 yrs old), etc. Generally it is best if a player tries to play on a team for which he is the correct age, but players can and do play up (i.e. a U-08 player playing on a U-09 team) for a variety of reasons. Players can never play on a team for which they are too old to qualify. To see what soccer age your child is considered consult the age group chart for next season here. Hyde Park Soccer sponsors teams of various age groups depending on the number of players interested and availablity of coaches. See the Travel Teams page for the list of travel teams currently playing under Hyde Park Soccer.
When Do Teams Practice?
Travel Soccer is a year-round program. Typically, teams begin practicing in late August and practice twice per week outdoors during the fall. During the winter, teams typically practice once per week in a local school gym. Once outdoors again in the spring, teams typically practice twice per week through the end of the season in June.
When Are The Games?
Games are played on Sunday afternoons in the fall and spring for teams U-14 and younger. Teams U-15 and older play only in the spring as it is assumed that most of the players are playing high school soccer. Expect about 9 games to be played in the fall and 9 games in the spring. Half of the games are away (some as close as Rhinebeck or Poughkeepsie, others up to an hour away) and half of the games are played at Creek Road.
Can Kids Play Other Sports Too?
Yes! Once on a team, players are encouraged to attend every practice and game, BUT football, baseball, etc. are fun too and cross training develops better athletes. Accommodations are made for players of other sports. Travel Soccer is year-round so we will still be playing when the other sports end their season.
